Dreariest Friends,

If you know me well, you know the deep compassion I have always had for animals, especially my desire to help any animal in need. During some soul searching times in 2017 I walked through the doors of the Humane Society of Washington County and found an amazing group of people who shared this same passion. Volunteering my time beside these selfless folks is just one of the rewarding aspects of my time at HSWC.

In February of 2019 my sidekick Zeo came to the Humane Society of Washington County as a stray at only eight months old. He was found on a main highway in Hagerstown and was brought in by a kind citizen, he was never claimed by his owners. Upon arrival it was obvious that Zeo was limping on his back left leg. X-rays showed that his femoral head was malformed, which meant surgery was needed.

I was so lucky to have the opportunity to foster Zeo through his surgery, which ended up being an FHO (his femoral head needed removed). Zeo also ended up having to have a secondary surgery, all within the first two weeks of showing up at the shelter. When I began fostering Zeo I was so hopeful that he would get along with my cats as I had really been looking forward to finding a new canine friend for many years. Zeo was such a little trooper throughout his surgeries, all of his pain med injections and his post surgical care. My husband and I bonded with him the day we picked him up at the shelter, a week prior to his first surgery. Caring for him through his surgeries and recovery made our bond even stronger.

After approximately a month, we adopted Zeo and he officially became one of the family. I always say this, and have seen bumper stickers referring to animal rescues that say this “who found who”. I know that Zeo found me. I always tell him the story of how we met. And how he told the kind lady that found him running on the road in Hagerstown to take him to the shelter so he could meet the one blonde lady that volunteered there. Five months prior to meeting Zeo I had lost my Father after a two year recovery battle from a tragic medical mishap. My Father had lived with us, so there was an unsettling quiet void. Zeo helped me through many lonely days, and helped to awaken our home from the quietness. He truly found us, and we couldn’t imagine our lives without him. Thank you HSWC!

I estimate that the total cost of Zeo’s care, surgeries, food, medications, nueter, general vaccines, and other necessities during the time we fostered him was at a minimum $4,000. This was all covered by the Humane Society of Washington County.

I’m asking you to join me in supporting the shelter so they may provide care for other animals like Zeo. I’ll take care of the craziness, and do the polar plunging. I am hoping that you could support me with a small donation that will go along way to help me meet my goal for the Humane Society of Washington County’s 19th Annual Polar Bear Plunge.

Current photo was from my virtual plunge last year in our stream. This year the plunge will be held at Greenbrier State Park in Maryland.
